LandScan Global Population Database


The LandScan Global Population Database is developed by the Geographic Information Science & Technology team of scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Using an innovative approach with GIS and remote sensing, LandScan is widely considered the gold standard in global population data. New versions of LandScan have been released annually since the year 2000.


At a high resolution of one kilometer, LandScan is the most accurate and reliable global population distribution model ever developed.


The LandScan algorithm, an R&D 100 Award Winner, uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.


High-resolution imagery sources are used extensively for verification and validation to refine urban areas and add thousands of smaller villages and populated places.


LandScan+

East View introduces a new value-added geospatial solution by combining authoritative infrastructure data with the award-winning LandScan Global Population Database. LandScan+ is a new opportunity for GIS users to improve their ability to analyze and understand the impact of conditions, surroundings and events on human population dynamics.

Since 1989, East View has acquired a vast archive of global maps and geospatial datasets that can now be paired with LandScan population data. Here are some examples:
