Mapping in Kyrgyzstan still follows patterns established in the Soviet era. The 1942 specification is used for topographic series, with maps based on the Gauss conformal transverse cylindrical projection, Krassovsky ellipsoid.
Soviet military topographic mapping of Kyrgyzstan is available at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (5 sheets, complete coverage, published 1969-1990); 1:500,000 (10 sheets, complete coverage, published 1966-1989); 1:200,000 (54 sheets, complete coverage, published 1964-1992); 1:100,000 (173 sheets, complete coverage, published 1961-1991); 1:50,000 (573 sheets, complete coverage, published 1963-1992) and city (1:10,000) topographic mapping of Dzhambul (Taraz), Frunze (Bishkek), Osh and Przhevalski (Karakol) published between 1982 and 1987. These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
Following independence a new national mapping agency was founded in Bishkek in 1992, the State Agency for Geodesy and Cartography (Kyrgyzgeodezija), building upon the former Soviet republican mapping organization first established in 1966. Kyrgyzgeodezija is responsible for official topographic and geodetic survey, as well as being responsible for cadastral registration, for inventories of natural resources and for standardization of place names.
Earth science mapping of Kyrgyzstan was produced by Russian agencies, notably Vserossiiskoi nauchno-issle-dovatel’skii geologicheskii Institut (VSEGEI) in St. Petersburg. The country was mapped in six-sheet geological and tectonic map sets, published in 1982, in association with the Geological Board and the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR at 1:500,000 scale. The State Committee for Geology and the Protection of Mineral Resources now acts as the national earth science mapping agency.
The Soviet Academy of Sciences (now Rossiskaja Akademija Nauk (RAN)) sponsored various thematic maps of Kyrgyzstan, including a two-volume national atlas of the Republic. The physical and natural sciences volume was published in 1987 and a second human and social volume is under compilation in the Kyrgyz Academy of Sciences in Bishkek. RAN also compiled 10 thematic map sets at 1:500,000 scale in the 1980s, each with about 10 sheets giving complete coverage of the Republic. The State Inspection of Land Utilization has responsibility for cadastral, land use and agricultural mapping of the country.
A Russian town map of Bishkek was produced in the 1980s by the Russian official mapping agency Glavnoe Upravlenie Geodezii Kartografii (GUGK), now Federal’naya Sluzhba Geodezii i Kartografii Rossii (Roskartografija) and was revised in 1995 in Cyrillic and English language versions by Kyrgyzgeodezija. GUGK also produced a number of special topographic sheets of tourist or key mountainous areas, such as the Tien Shan, Lenin Peak, and the areas around Issyk Kul Lake and Frunze.
Western agencies have also started to publish mountain maps with transliterated place names. West Col published a map of the Tien Shan mountains for the climbing market, and the Swiss firm Karto Atelier Arne Rohweder published a 1:100,000 scale topographic map of Pik Lenin in 1996.
