Topographic

The Federal Islamic Republic of Comoros comprising the islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli gained independence from France in 1975. A mapping agency exists in the capital Moroni, the Direction de l’Urbanisme et de l’Habitat, which maintains 1:2,500 scale photomaps of the main settlements, but almost all the topographic coverage of the islands has been carried out by French agencies.

Soviet military topographic mapping of Comoros is available at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (2 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1991); 1:500,000 (2 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1987) and 1:200,000 (3 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1985). These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.

Imagery

A 1:50,000 scale photogrammetric series from Institut Géographique National (IGN) was recently published for each island. These maps are on the UTM projection, International ellipsoid, and show relief with 20 m contours.

Soil

Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le Développement en Coopération (ORSTOM) publishes soil mapping of Anjouan dating from the 1950s. Ecological mapping of Grand Comore has been carried out by Institut Français de Pondichéry (IFP)..

Tourist/Reference

A commercial map of the islands was published by German publisher Hϋttinger in 1997.
