The Cook Islands are administered by New Zealand and mapping of the group has been carried out by various New Zealand surveying authorities. A 1:25,000 scale series (Info-Map 272) was started in the early 1980s by the New Zealand Department of Survey and Land Information (now Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)) and Terralink. These four-color metric maps have an orthophoto base and are on a Transverse Mercator projection, International ellipsoid. Other larger scale mapping of islands in the group is compiled by the Cook Islands Survey Department on Raratonga.
Soviet military topographic mapping of the Cook Islands is available at the following scale: 1:1,000,000 (6 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1965). This product is available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
Oceanographic charting of the islands was compiled by the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute (NZOI), (now National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research Ltd. (NIWA)) including six-sheet 1:200,000 scale coverage. Different constituent bodies within what are now the New Zealand Crown Science Research Institutes compiled thematic coverage of the group in the 1970s and 1980s.
A single-sheet geological map of Raratonga was issued by the New Zealand Geological Survey, now Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (IGNS).
The New Zealand Soil Bureau mapped the Cook Islands in a six sheet 1:15,000 scale soil series published with explanatory notes. in 1986.
