Aerial photographic cover of the Falkland Islands was obtained in 1956 during the Falkland Islands Aerial Survey Expedition mounted by the British Government and carried out by Huntings Aerosurveys. This, in conjunction with a ground network established by triangulation and tellurometer survey during the following years, was used by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (now Ordnance Survey International (OSI)) to produce a 1:50,000 scale map in 29 sheets (DOS453/Series H791). This map is on a Transverse Mercator projection, International ellipsoid, with UTM grid and 50 ft interval contours, and was originally issued in 1962-63. Some sheets have been revised.
The derived map at 1:250,000 (DOS 653) was first published in 1964, and reached its third edition in 1995. It has layered relief and a 500 ft contour interval. In 1996, Ordnance Survey published a 1:250,000 scale tourist map of the Falkland Islands. This two-sided map is derived from (DOS 653) and (OSD 053) with the addition of tourist symbols and text.
Large scale mapping of the area around Stanley was undertaken in the 1980s based on photography flown in 1983-84 by Clyde Surveys. Scales are 1:2,500 (OSD 053) and some sheets have also been enlarged to 1:5,000 (OSD 00053). The sheets are contoured at 5 m intervals. Two printed sheets at 1:12,500 of Stanley and Port Harcourt respectively (GSGS 5456) were published in 1982 by the Directorate of Military Surveys.
Soviet military topographic mapping of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) exists at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (4 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1962); 1:500,000 (4 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1985) and 1:200,000 (14 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1980). These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) have also been included in the publication program of the Institute Geográfico Militar (IGMA) of Argentina. Published maps are (Sheet 5260) in the 1:500,000 series, an inset to (Sheet SN-20) in the Argentine 1:1,000,000 IMW Series, and a 1:5,000,000 scale maps of islands of the South Atlantic claimed by Argentina.
The geology of the Falklands was originally surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey under Dr. R.J. Adie in 1969─72 and a 1:250,000 scale geological map published by the DOS. In 1996, a new two-year mapping project was initiated by the UK British Geological Survey (BGS), resulting in the 1999 publication of a new 1:250,000 scale geological map of the islands in two sheets.
A land systems analysis of the Falklands was undertaken in the 1960s by the Overseas Development Administration and published in 1969 as LRDC Miscellaneous Report 72. The 1982 reprint of this report was accompanied by a 1:250,000 Land Systems map in two sheets.
A4 sized maps showing Designated Areas of the Continental Shelf under the Proclamation of November 1991 and fisheries conservation and management zones have been published by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Library.
An Atlas of breeding birds of the Falkland Islands has been published by Anthony Nelson.
The small-scale map first published by Anthony Nelson in 1981, appeared in a new edition in 1987, and has been further revised. Other publishers of general purpose and tourist maps of the Falklands include International Travel Maps (ITM), Vancouver, and Automapa, Buenos Aires.
