Jan Mayen, a volcanic island belonging to Norway, has been mapped by the Norsk Polarinstitutt (NPI), Tromsø. Triangulation and fieldwork were carried out in 1949-50 and a 1:50,000 scale map was compiled using air photography flown in 1949 and 1955. The map is contoured at 20 m intervals and glaciers are shown in white with ice-free areas in yellow. A single sheet map at 1:100.000 scale, with 40 m contours, published in 1990, and compiled from 1975 air photography and new GPS data. The map shows changes consequent on the volcanic eruption of Beerenberg in 1970. Projection is Transverse Mercator, geodetic datum WGS84.
Soviet military topographic mapping of Jan Mayen exists at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1975) and 1:200,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1969). These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
The Norwegian national atlas Nasjonalatlas for Norge includes several 1:1,000,000 scale maps of Svalbard and Jan Mayen together, covering the themes of landforms, bedrock geology, vegetation and wildlife.
