The islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon lie only a score of kilometers from the coast of Newfoundland, but they form an overseas department of France. Triangulation of the islands was carried out in the early 1950s and linked to Newfoundland. The Institut Géographique National (IGN), Paris, published a four-color 1:20,000 scale map in six sheets in 1955. Following the acquisition of new air photography in 1985 and survey revision in 1986, these sheets were superseded by a two-sheet cover in the 1:25,000 scale Série bleue (sheets 4798S and 4799S), published in 1988. The projection is UTM, International ellipsoid. Contours are at 5 m intervals with the addition of relief shading, and an overprint of tourist information.
Soviet military topographic mapping of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is available at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1990); 1:500,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1986) and 1:200,000 (3 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1983).
