São Tomé e Príncipe, two islands off the coast of West Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, have been an independent Republic since 1975. Formerly they were an overseas province of Portugal, and topographic maps were published by the Junta de Investigações do Ultramar, Lisbon. A 1:25,000 scale map was published in 1961─64 in seven sheets, together with a general map at 1:75,000 scale. The projection was Transverse Mercator, International ellipsoid.
The current mapping authority is the Missão Geográfica-Hidrográfica, São Tomé.
Soviet military topographic mapping of São Tome and Príncipe exist at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (3 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1985); and 1:500,000 (2 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1982). These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
Soil mapping of both islands was undertaken by the Junta de Investigações do Ultramar prior to independence, and two 1:50,000 scale sheets were prepared.
Small-scale maps have recently been compiled for tourists. These include two maps of the islands and their principal cities by Amaro Guadéncio Mendes Em, and a general 1:100,000 scale map with layer colored relief and legend in four languages by Fernando Lima de Trindade.
