The French overseas department of Réunion is mapped by French agencies. The Institut Géographique National (IGN) compiles the basic scale for the island, a 1:25,000 scale series, recast in six sheets in 1992 and conforming to the French TOP25 specifications. This photogrammetric series uses the UTM projection, International ellipsoid, shows relief with 10 m contours and has replaced earlier 1:50,000 scale and 1:25,000 scale Série bleue coverage.
Soviet military topographic mapping is available at the following scales: 1:1,000,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1994); 1:500,000 (1 sheet, complete coverage, published in 1989) and 1:200,000 (2 sheets, complete coverage, published in 1985). These products are available in print, digital raster and digital vector GIS formats from East View Geospatial.
Hydrographic charting of the island is published by Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine (SHOM). It includes two 1:60,000 scale charts of the island (with 1:10,000 scale insets) and a 1:175,000 scale overview chart.
Earth science maps of Réunion published by Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) include a four-sheet 1:50,000 scale geological map and 1:100,000 geological map with raised relief. Volcanic mapping has also been carried out.
Resources mapping of the island from Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le Développement en Coopération (ORSTOM) has included single-sheet soil coverage map, and some 1:40,000 scale mapping of the northwestern part of the island.
The national atlas was compiled by IGN in the mid-1970s, with nearly 200 maps of Réunion mostly at 1:150,000 scale. CNRS Éditions recently published a detailed linguistic and ethnographic atlas of the island in its regional linguistic atlas project.
Indexed street guides to the major settlements are locally published by SARL Azalées Éditions, Ste-Marie. IGN also publishes a regularly revised 1:100,000 scale tourist map, and a raised plastic relief map of the island.
